Have You Been Accused Of A Sex Crime? Questions You Should Ask When Hiring A Criminal Attorney

by Ray Barnes

If you have been arrested and charged with a sex crime, you may be looking to hire a criminal attorney to assist you with the case. Many sex crimes carry long jail terms and the possibility of having to register as a sex offender if you are convicted, so obtaining the best counsel is important. If you are looking to hire a sex crimes attorney, you may be unsure of what to look for in an attorney. Aside from asking about their education and fees, here are a few of the questions you should be asking as you interview these attorneys.

What is Your Record With Similar Sex Crime Cases?

While it is important to ask an attorney about their experience, you want to hone in on this question. They may win 50 percent of their cases overall, but they may lose 100 percent of rape cases or child molestation cases. As such, you want to ask what their record is with the sex crime you are convicted of to ensure they can properly handle and defend the type of crime you have been charged with.

What Defenses May Be Applicable to My Case?

During your meeting with the attorney, they will ask you questions about your life and your interactions with the alleged victim. By the time you are done talking, the attorney should have a general idea as to how they will defend you. Ask them what defenses may be applicable to your case and how they plan on handling the case. This will help you see what their plan is for your case and allow you to determine if you agree with it or not.

Do You Handle Civil Cases as Well?

The last question to ask is whether the attorney handles civil cases as well. If you have been accused of a sex crime, you may be facing criminal charges now. But the victim may also decide to file a civil case as well. Some sex crime attorneys only handle criminal cases, while others will handle both aspects. Asking this question allows you to determine what the attorney handles and if you want to hire them if they only handle one aspect instead of both.

Having an interview with a sex crime criminal attorney can be hard. The attorney will be asking you personal questions about your sex life and possible consensual sex or sexual behavior with the victim. They need to know everything to properly defend you and present your case to a judge or jury. However, the interview should not be solely about you. You should be able to ask the attorney questions as well, such as the ones above. This will help you find an attorney who you feel comfortable with and who you feel is best qualified to help with your case. Keep these questions in mind when you contact local law firms, such as Boehmer Law.
