3 Tips For Going To Court For Your DUI

by Ray Barnes

If you have an upcoming court date for a DUI, you could be wondering what you should do when you go to court. These are a few tips that can help you on this important day.

1. Make Sure That You Go With an Attorney

One big mistake that many people make when going to court for a DUI is going without the help of a DUI attorney. Even if you think that your case is pretty simple, or even if you do not have a previous record, you could face serious consequences if you go to court without proper legal representation. If you have not yet hired an attorney to help with your case, it is important to do so as soon as you can. Then, you can get help with your defense on your court date, and you will have a legal professional on your side who can help walk you through each step of your court date.

2. Dress Properly

Next, you should make sure that you dress properly on the day of your DUI court date. It is important to look neat and tidy, so make sure that you wear properly fitting clothing that is not too casual. On the other hand, though, there is a chance that you will be in court for a while on your court date, so you will probably want to pick clothing that fits you relatively comfortably. After all, the last thing that you want to worry about while you're in court is being uncomfortable due to poorly fitting or otherwise uncomfortable pieces.

3. Avoid Being Under the Influence

One major thing that you should keep in mind when going to court for a DUI is the importance of being completely clean and sober on your court date. After all, if you show up while you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, it could negatively impact you in a number of ways. At the very least, being under the influence on your court date could make you look bad in front of the judge. Depending on the situation and your level of impairment, you could even risk being arrested or otherwise getting in trouble if you aren't sober when you show up for court. If you need help with getting clean before your court date, consider looking into inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation options; not only can this help you when handling your DUI, but it can help you in other ways in your life, too.
